Why are we not talking about how quickly and how personally Harry understands Krum’s motivations in the World Cup. It’s not just because they’re both great seekers – this is a moment that is set up to establish that Harry identifies with Krum. Sure, he’s presented to us as much more innocent and much less arrogant, but rolling is taking this moment to let us know that Harry understands the impulse make sacrifices for the sake of retaining control. And isn’t that essentially the superobjective of the end of the series? Harry sacrifices everything to walk into those woods – he knows that Voldemort is going to beat him, and he wants to end it, but on his own terms. That trait becomes a such a crucial theme of the last book, and Rowling was pointing to it all the way back in book four.
I love rereading.
To me this is SUCH an important character trait for Harry. He has such a strong desire for independence and to do things because he wants to; to find a way to feel in control in a world that has never let him have any.
